Relationship balance

Hearts express appreciation between linked partners. Use Send a gesture on Home: choose Small (1 heart), Medium (2 hearts, selected by default), or Large (3 hearts), optionally add a message of up to 140 characters, then send.

Reading the balance

The left pan represents hearts you received. The right pan represents hearts your partner received. The heavier pan sits lower. Opening the balance shows hearts entering each pan before the scale settles. The decorative hearts represent relative weight, not individual transactions. Reduced motion shows the final state immediately.

Home shows a compact overview. Open the balance and expand How it works for exact values and gesture counts. Both sides start empty, with “Your first hearts start here.”

How it works

Each gesture contributes its value multiplied by a weight that decreases linearly over 30 days: full weight when sent, half after 15 days, and zero after 30 days. The effective score on each side is capped at 10. Sending a gesture increases the recipient’s score; it does not also increase the sender’s received score. Gestures remain recorded even when the display cap is reached.

Status uses the absolute difference between the effective scores, including fractional values:

DifferenceStatus
0–1 inclusiveIn balance
Greater than 1, up to 3 inclusiveA little out of balance
Greater than 3Time for a thoughtful gesture

The scale can still tilt slightly within the “In balance” range. This is a view of recent appreciation, not a judgment of either partner.

Moments and notifications

Home previews your two most recent moments. Open Recent moments to explore more, read messages, and react to gestures you received. Your partner receives a notification in their chosen language when notifications are enabled. Your own words are preserved.

You need a linked partner. Each gesture sends 1–3 hearts. There is a limit of 20 gestures per rolling 24 hours. The 10-heart display cap does not prevent a new gesture from being recorded.

Hearts from memories

Your first successfully saved photo of the day in Our Memories earns one heart for you. It joins your existing balance and follows the same fading and display-cap rules. Replacing or deleting the photo does not earn another heart that day.

These relationship hearts are separate from the personal hearts in your heart bank that can pay for extra actions.
